I am the Vine
Jesus often used images and parables to make his message clear; ‘Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness’, ‘I am the vine you are the branches’, ‘I am the bread of life’… but we find these references on other places in the Bible too, like ‘Taste and see that the Lord is good’ in Psalms. Off course we are not talking about literal food here. Jesus is not saying that if we believe in him, we will never need to drink physical water. He is not talking about a physical hunger for food and drink but a hunger in our soul. Only Jesus can satisfy our soul’s desires. If we let him fill us, heal us and transform us he promises that we will not hunger for things that will not satisfy.
Jesus uses the Vine as a picture in John 15 of how we need to be attached to him. Only by staying in him can we bear fruit, without him we can do nothing.
